Tom and Zaia Kendall

Tom Kendall is a permaculture farmer with a lifelong broad acre agricultural background. He is co-founder of the PRI Sunshine Coast Inc and PRI Luganville, Vanuatu and runs PDC, Practical Certificate, Practical Diploma and 4 week Intensive Practical Life Skills training courses on his Permaculture Demonstration Site “Maungaraeeda”. He is part of the Permaculture Sustainable Consulting team, is a PRI Master Plan Site Consultant and does regular personal consultations. He has extensive experience in tropical, sub tropical and dry land climates and has the ability to read large scale as well as smaller scale landscapes. With his farming background, Tom is a very hands on and practical man and is solution focused. He has extensive travel experience, integrates easily with local cultures and people and enjoys studying landscapes, buildings and the effects of climate on structures, flora and fauna.


Work Experience:

2012 – current
Co-founded PRI Sunshine Coast Inc in 2012, running short courses in earth works and building as well as PDC courses and Internships (now 4 week Permaculture Life Skills courses) (http://diyfoodandhealth.com)
Co-taught several PDC courses with Geoff Lawton. He has over 1000 hours of PDC teaching experience and has been training people in practical permaculture skills full time on his site since 2012.

2005 – current
Working on his demonstration site “Maungaraeeda” in Sub Tropical Queensland, Australia, putting Permaculture systems in place such as animal systems (chickens, cows, goats, cell grazing systems etc), energy systems (solar, building a biogas biodigester etc), food forestry (using biological resources), earth works and water management (swales, dams,
water catchments, nutrient cycling etc), vegetable gardens (composting systems, plant propagating etc), building (solar passive with local rock and recycled materials) and many more. These systems were all put together by himself using local resources mainly from the property itself.

2000 – 2011
Roof construction, wwoofing (volunteering) on Permaculture properties, property investment and part time maintenance and building jobs

1992 – 2000
Farmed 7000 acres Bio Dynamically with wheat, cows and sheep (broad acre farming) in Western Australia (average rainfall 250-280mm per year)

1964 – 1992
Born and raised on a 11,000 acre farm in Western Australia which he took over from his father in 1992. He farmed wheat, sheep and barley in a conventional manner with his father until he took over the farm, downsized and converted to Bio Dynamics in 1992.

1988 – 1990
Worked in the building industry in Perth focused on carpentry.

Zaia grew up in a family of musicians in Holland, and has a background in top sport and web development and design. She co-founded the PRI Luganville and PRI Sunshine Coast Inc with Tom, and runs all the background stuff, like finances, business administration, website design and maintenance, writes articles, records and edits videos and also organises the cooking and the kitchen on site. She has been researching and studying nutrition and health for 20+ years, has a certificate in Nutrition and is currently studying FDN and CHEK courses. She is a certified member of the International Institute of Complementary Therapists and is a holistic food, health and lifestyle coach. She is also an active member of several musical projects and bands, involved in community music and runs percussion workshops as part of a lifestyle integration program.

Work Experience:
2012 – current:
Administration, finances, web development, design and maintenance, cooking and meal planning, marketing, social media, video production and co-teaching hidden structures elements at PRI Sunshine Coast. Will start cooking classes and holistic food and lifestyle coaching sessions in 2016, as well as music and exercise sessions.

2006 – current:
Involved in various percussion bands: Latin American Percussion, Marimba and Gypsy Bands. Played in Big Bara Boom, Kkarimba and Jambezi, and is still active with The Pyrophone Juggernaut and The Unusual Suspects. She conducts marimba and percussion lessons and workshops and composes her own music. Released her solo CD “Breaking Barriers” in 2014, and has also recorded with Big Bara Boom, Kkarimba and the Unusual Suspects. Has been performing at Woodford Folk Festival since 2008 and is actively involved in community music.

2009 – 2011:
Administration, cleaning, reception and marketing at Living Valley Springs Health Retreat.

2005 – 2008:
Homeschooling her children.

2001 – 2003:
Contracted for Drake International Employment Agency as Web Developer and was director of Animo, a web solutions company in Noosa.

1997 – 2001:
Web Developer at seek.com.au from when they first started the business. Front end design, database integration design and development, worked with HTML, ASP, SQL, PHP, Javascript, CSS and MySQL.

Designed websites for Internet Service Providers and their customers.

1993 – 1996:
Worked at Mt Buller in the Race Department in Administration, at TAFE in Administration and course design and at ski lodges in Housekeeping and Kitchen; created and sold paintings, designed and painted signs for small businesses in the area, designed and printed T-shirts.

1990 – 1993:
Various positions in Computer Based Training Development, Administration and Sales

1987 – 1989:
Full time snow ski racer living in Austria. Dutch Slalom champion in 1989, competing in FIS and Europa Cup events in slalom and giant slalom.
